CUTTING EDGE Faculty

We’ve hand picked some of Canada's most skilled and knowledgeable educators in the industry to bring you a cutting edge learning experience. We cap our capacity for this training to a very limited number of trainees to ensure they get extra attention and guidance from our faculty throughout the program!

Ellen Reesor

Lead Trainer

Ellen’s first yoga class was at age 14, and though it was tough, she quickly fell in love with the way yoga made her feel. Though memberships were out of her price range at the time, she was determined to grow her yoga practice, so she volunteered through energy exchange programs, practicing in the evenings and cleaning the studio after classes.

As she broadened her practice, she completed a 200-hour Yoga Teacher Training in Hatha yoga, and later went on to complete a 500-hour Modo YTT as well as a 100-hour Modo Yoga Vinyasa Flow training. In 2018, Ellen completed a 10 month Teacher Training/Mentorship Program through Spirit Loft Movement Centre, which focused on an interdisciplinary approach to movement & mindfulness education. Ellen completed a 10 Day silent Vipassana Meditation Course and is currently enrolled in a 9 month meditation course studying under Poep Sa Frank Jude focusing on the five precepts. Ellen spends her winters rock climbing, mountaineering, and studying - working towards her bachelor’s degree in Psychology. She considers herself an eternal student and is constantly attending workshops and trainings to learn and grow.

Over the years, yoga has deeply enriched her life mentally, physically and spiritually, and she continues to find fulfillment in helping others to tap into the same joy that yoga has brought her.

Andre Talbot

Mindfulness & Meditation

Andre enjoyed a 10-year career as a professional football player in the Canadian Football League where he achieved numerous accolades including Grey Cup Champion.

Since retiring from the rigorous and gruelling nature of athletic competition, Andre has continued to explore, research and share in different disciplines of movement and stillness practices. In movement, Andre blends his lifetime of practice in athletic development with the more subtle and mindful aspects of the embodied arts to assist practitioners in restoring a greater sense of connection, curiosity and playfulness with their body through movement practice. Andre's interest in mindfulness and stillness practices led him to formal study and training with his mentor and teacher Poep Sa (Dharma Teacher) Frank Jude Boccio (Mindfulness Yoga, Zen Naturalism) and the Empty Mountain Sangha. Andre leads mindfulness meditation study and practice groups from a naturalistic heart centred approach.

Andre believes that movement and stillness practices provide us with tools to deepen and strengthen our relationships, helping us to build a greater sense of community and well-being. He shares his lifetime of experience and dedicated practice with others, at his Toronto based studio the Spirit Loft Movement & Yoga Centre. He also leads teacher trainings, retreats and workshops.

Kind-Yoga-Marg-Drudge.png

Marg Drudge

Assistant Trainer

Marg believes that the way we move matters...That our bodies benefit tremendously from the mindful shapes they are encouraged to take in a yoga practice.

Marg also knows that we love to be challenged - even encouraged - to do a little more - perhaps even a little faster - both on and off the yoga mat.

Her invitation is to come to your mat and do less. Slow down. Connect with your body and your breath.

Since starting her yoga journey in 2008, she has explored many styles and teachings of yoga. Her mat keeps bringing her back to asana (postures) that nourish and heal and that allow for mindful movement and profound respect for the bodies that we do life in.

Marg completed a certification program in Yoga for Healthy Aging with a medical doctor from California. This intensive training affirmed in many ways the practice that she has been allowed to guide at KIND Yoga. She strongly believes that whether you are 18 or 88 - or somewhere in between or beyond - you are invited to come to your mat and move in ways that matter and nourish your body and soul.

Dione has a formal education in the areas of psychology and the justice system. She holds a Bachelor Degree in Criminal Psychology and a Graduate diploma in Justice Studies. Anderson Salas

Anatomy and Physiology

Anderson’s Yoga journey began at the end of high school. After his first Savasana (corpse pose), he experienced something unlike anything before; a feeling of deep peace, presence and well-being, “I felt like I had been massaged inside out”. He was instantly hooked to this ancient practice which became a medicine to begin healing anxieties and stresses. In 2011 he enrolled in a 350hr Hatha CYT from Synergy Movement Yoga.

His YTT teacher Ruth van der Voort (director of the Toronto Yoga conference) encouraged and supported him in the immersion of yearly workshops from renowned national and international Yogis to further his understanding of the art.

Bridging ancient Eastern Wisdom with modern Western Science is Anderson’s passion, and being able to share this with others brings him immense joy.

Anderson holds a B.A., Hons. in Athletic Therapy, and is a registered Massage Therapist, Manual Osteopath and ELDOA level 3 instructor. A practitioner of Vipassana Meditation, he’s been attending and volunteering yearly at silent retreat centers since 2014.

Dr. Brian Beech

Hali Schwartz

Yogic Philosophy and History

Hali has been immersed in the world of yoga since she was a young girl - her first yoga teacher was her mother. She has a clear and distinct memory of being 8 years old and asking her mother: “What is Yoga?” Her answer mystified Hali, being so young. She answered: “Yoga means ‘balance.’” In those days, Hali didn’t quite understand what that meant. At that time it had already been a few years that her mother had been studying and practicing yoga and meditation with great devotion. Hali went with her to all the classes and sessions she was taking with an Indian guru who was touring Canada and the US. It was the 1970’s and there was a growing group of people who were truly pioneers in exploring the world of yoga and finding out how its teachings can transform lives. Every day they would come to Hali's house for their yoga meetings and she would sit and listen and laugh and absorb the energy of it, even though she didn’t really know what they were talking about.

Years later, in 1988, Hali traveled to India for the first time to the ash ram where her mother had decided to devote her life. She has traveled there every year since, delving into all aspects of the yoga tradition at the International Meditation Institute (I.M.I. ) in Kullu, in the North Western Himalayas where her mother still lives nearly 40 years later! It was at the institute that she was introduced to yoga philosophy in all its glory. She studied the Sanskrit language, several yoga and vedantic scriptures such as the Upanishads, The Bhagavad Gita, Patanjali’s Yoga Sutra (to name but a few) as well as chanting, meditation, hatha, kriya and restorative yoga.

In 1999, Hali started teaching yoga in Toronto, while continuing her studies in Ashtanga Yoga with the incomparable Ron Reid at the Downward Dog. In 2001, sge began teaching yoga philosophy, Sanskrit, chanting and meditation in various teacher training programs around the city, and has trained hundreds of teachers since then at Yoga Space, Octopus Garden, IAM Yoga and Sananda Yoga. She loves mentoring new teachers as well as introducing new students to the amazing benefits of this awesome tradition.

In 2002, Hali took her first group of yoga students with her to India, and has since lead several pilgrimage voyages to the Himalayas, Goa, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Varanasi, Rajasthan, New Delhi and Mumbai. She is so passionate about this subject. It is her life’s joy to share this knowledge and this practice with anyone and everyone who has the interest to dive into it!

Katie Shim

Breath Workshop

An avid explorer, Katie has travelled to 25 countries, has lived in Toronto, Canada; Singapore; Venice Beach, California; and now calls the North Shore of Oahu Hawai’i her home. Although she has journeyed around the world and explored a variety of cultures, nothing quite compares to the journey & inner exploration into the self that she is still on today.

Led to Hawai’i through a clear message she received during a breathwork experience, Katie knew how powerful this practice was and decided to make it a regular practice. By devoting herself to this fundamental medicine of life: the breath—she’s experienced radical shifts from the inside-out and is grateful to share this work with the islands of Hawai'i and the world. Her intention with every journey she leads is to create a powerful and safe space for you to experience more of yourself and cultivate a deeper relationship with the most important person in your life—you.

A previous yoga teacher, community architect, leadership facilitator, and happy traveller, Katie finds it soul-satisfying to live life guided by her curiosity. She attributes breathwork to being one of her greatest adventures.

Curriculum

The KIND Yoga 250-hour teacher training is an interactive learning platform that offers movement, lectures, group-learning, self-study, and virtual content. We dedicate plenty of time in the training for practice teaching, constructive feedback and mentorship and have additionally incorporated a comprehensive practicum to prepare trainees to leave feeling confident in their ability to understand and teach yoga.

Students will explore Buddhist practices of the mindfulness tradition from a naturalistic, scientific and empirical understanding and will develop tools to help them navigate the world in a more meaningful, connected and skillful manner. Our program places a strong emphasis on the importance a mindfulness meditation practice and there is a significant portion of time dedicated to cultivating a personal and group practice. Each day of training will include one yoga class and a formal seated meditation led by lead instructor Ellen Reesor and other guest faculty to ensure that students are integrating what the material covered in lectures into their physical bodies.

YTT-Curriculum_04.png

Students will learn about functional movement and mechanics as it relates to injury prevention during the practice of yoga. Together students will explore how to efficiently and effectively cultivate length, stability, coordination, tension and power through the lens of fascia, joint mechanics and multi-planar movement. Students will be discussing alternative ways of looking at the body and movement as a whole. Learning how to feel from within our own bodies so to best cue and facilitate a safe and meaningful asana practice.

YTT-Curriculum_08.png

Students will receive an introductory examination of inclusivity within yoga classes and spaces. Based on the assumption that there is under representation within the yoga community, students will engage in self inquiry and the exploration of creating accessible classes and spaces with the goal is to spark further study.

YTT-Curriculum_03.png

This aspect of our YTT is completely unique as we are offering a comprehensive and integrated hybrid (online/in person) learning platform. We will collaborate with the highly acclaimed anatomy and physiology educator Drew Hume of Yoga Detour. Students will have access to an online learning platform that includes written lessons and videos alongside multiple meetings/Q&A sessions with Drew Hume himself.

YTT-Curriculum_05.png

Students will explore through lecture and discussion the origins and meaning of yoga, the timeline of yoga’s long philosophical and practical history, the five yogas: history, philosophy, teachings and practice, an introduction to chanting, and hymns from the Upanishads, and how to skillfully apply yogas philosophical teachings into your classes.

Our program covers the traditional and contemporary approaches to yoga sequencing and the differences between varying sects of yoga with a focus on the Hatha/Vinyasa style. Students will learn how to design creative yoga sequences that are accessible, meaningful and sustainable and will learn how to modify to meet the needs of differing levels of abilities including beginners, intermediate, and advanced, as well as how to teach a successful yoga class for students across the life cycle including yoga classes for kids, teens, seniors and those dealing with mental or physical health limitations.

YTT-Curriculum_09.png

Trainees will dive into the business of yoga and balancing the interesting line of being both spiritual aspirants and business professionals. Students will discuss the tension that arises between our desires to be financially compensated for our work, and our wishes to be accessible in sharing our passion for mindfulness teachings. Students will discover how to distinguish themselves in an ever-growing, saturated market, create meaningful connections with dedicated students and a powerful presence with in-person and online communities, exude confidence teaching yoga in a variety of settings, leverage time-tested marketing and promotional practices, expand professional horizons to include corporate & philanthropic programs, and will experience the profound life-altering experience of what it means to have a sustainable, profitable yoga business. Trainees will leave with a library of business growth resources to reference and utilize, and a connected community of passionate wellness professionals.

YTT-Curriculum_06.png

Trainees will learn about the importance of showing up as their authentic selves, leading by example and staying true to their core values in all that they do, on and off the mat. From this place of authenticity trainees will learn how to confidently create a safe and nurturing space that allows the power of yoga to foster growth and change within each of students’ lives, creating a more peaceful world one individual at a time.

Internship Program

Following graduation, students are provided the opportunity to participate in an optional year-long internship program. Students will be assigned a dedicated weekly class with a senior instructor where they will have the opportunity to:

  • Hands-on assist without having to worry about teaching at the same time

  • Grow their understanding of biomechanics and functional movement in relation to yoga by observing bodies in movement in live classes

  • Mentorship/feedback after classes from their assigned senior teacher

  • We will also provide occasional résumé building sessions, websites, cover letters, or any other materials-in-progress for constructive feedback

  • Optional continuing education lectures/courses at a reduced cost

  • Opportunity to re-attend lectures in the current YTT program at a reduced cost

  • Mentorship/Feedback from former YTT graduates throughout the duration of the program

WHAT DO OUR YTT GRADUATES HAVE TO SAY?

"I just finished the 6-month Yoga Teacher Training at Kind in September and to just say it was a life-changing program would be an understatement. As someone who has dreamt of doing a YTT for several years, this program ticked off all the boxes I wanted and all the boxes I didn't even know existed. The training was beautifully guided by Ellen, the head instructor/studio owner of Kind, as well as an incredible group of Yoga, Mindfulness, Anatomy, Nature-Therapist and Movement Connoisseur experts. Each YTT weekend was something to look forward to, not only did I meet 20 new friends, I also gained a sense of community and meaning.

The YTT at Kind Yoga By Heart is special, not only is it one of the only nature-based YTT's that I know of, but, it is a program that challenges students to become more socially conscious, it is a program that challenges students to live mindfully/authentically and it is a program that supports students on their journey to becoming a little more who they are."

-Mariana Solden Paz, Alumni 2021

KIND's 250 Vinyasa Yoga Teacher Training is unlike anything else you'll experience and will absolutely exceed your expectations. It's abundantly clear that Ellen poured an immense amount of love and years of experience into her curriculum. Each lesson had so much intention and thought behind it, and the guest lecturers that KIND enlisted to enhance our learning were so incredibly talented and wise. It was such a privilege to learn from the KIND faculty and I feel like I walked out of the program a better version of myself. If you're feeling stagnant in your career or life in general, this program will open you up to new experiences and push you out of your comfort zone in the best way. I feel so much more confident and equipped to handle whatever life throws at me after this YTT. Personal growth and development aside, the community you will be stepping into when you begin the YTT is reason enough to join. KIND attracts some really amazing humans, and the friendships I made in the YTT program will last a lifetime and have already paid off the investment 10-fold! I seriously can't recommend this program enough. Thank you, KIND!

-Lindsay Allinson, Alumni 2021
